STEVE ROSSI

A CLOSER ACQUAINTANCE

I got started in photography when I was around 12 or so. I would go to the motorcycle races (motocross) and photograph my older brother......I was clueless as I used a 110 instamatic camera. At age 14, I moved to Tokyo, Japan with my parents where I really got involved with photography. While there I got my first manual Nikon FM and started shooting the high school sports programs. We even had a small photography class that I took which introduced me to processing and printing my B/W images.

Once I returned to the states I worked for minimum wage for a year and then decided to go to a photography school, The Rhode Island School of Photography. It was a 2 year school and while home on summer vacation, after the first year of classes, I had a job at a commercial photography studio. After that summer job I was hooked and my second and final year at school I couldn't get enough of photography.

After graduating from RISP I was unemployed for about 4 months and then I landed a full time assisting job for a location photographer. Of course this was too good to be true: this photographer had an office in the Time/Life building in New York City.........5 feet across the hall was the office of Alfred Eisenstadt and Carl Mydans. I was also introduced to Bill Eppridge and Eddie Adams.......this was just great!!.......but it didn't last long since his business slowed and I was let go after about 6 months.

Two days after being let go I was hired at another commercial studio where I stayed for 5 years. When I left that studio I freelance assisted over 50 photographers in some 3-4 years before slowly making the transition to full time photographer. While still assisting I photographed my first amateur, female bodybuilder which led to an ongoing personal project. The web site images are the evolution of that first shoot.

The images and the web site: Body/Soul Photography are entirely my own creation. It is an opportunity for me to have complete control over my images.......from start to finish. For now the majority of my assignments are in the corporate world and the web site images are my personal work. I hope to pursue more work in the fitness industry but it takes time. Thanks!.......and enjoy!
